Patagonia Retail Grant Program
From Great Outdoor Store
Great Outdoor Store has been carrying Patagonia products since the early 80's. GOS's mission to help our friends be comfortable in the outdoors is aided by the great products that Patagonia creates. In recent years Patagonia, in conjunction with their retailers around the country, has awarded grants to causes that improve the environment. As a part of this process, Patagonia relies on their retailers to help them find worthy causes in areas that may not get a lot of attention. Friends of the Big Sioux River's mission to change our relationship with our rivers is something that resonates with DeAnn and James and therefore made it a natural fit for this partnership. We were excited to learn in April that FBSR have been awarded $15,000 from the Patagonia Wholesale Impact Grant program.
The timing was perfect as Friends of the Big Sioux River was also the recipient of the money raised from Gear & Beer on May 4th. With the help of GOS's vendors, beer from Woodgrain, Fernson, and Remedy Brewing and the support of our awesome community, we were able to raise an additional $2400.
Friends of the Big Sioux River plans to use the funds to target a heavily used recreational stream, Split Rock Creek, contaminated with high levels of e-coli bacteria, nitrates, and sediment. The project would involve weekly water quality sampling of several sites from May through September, testing by the state health lab, with a subsequent determination of the primary sources of the contamination. After sources are identified, FBSR, through this grant, would provide financial assistance and partner with the East Dakota Water Development District. They would provide technical assistance and added financial assistance to implement practices that would reduce the sources of the contamination.
