Patagonia's Micro Puff Jacket
From Great Outdoor Store
The cooler weather is setting in, and after years of faithful service my Arc'teryx Atom LT needed to be replaced. The Atom LT was a fantastic jacket for me--it has synthetic insulation which stayed in place even when I got cuts or snags in the face fabric, it has an athletic fit so I could easily layer it under a warmer jacket or wind-proof vest, and if I was out working in the yard it was breathable enough to keep me comfortable. I got the jacket just after GOS moved to its current location at the Rock Island Depot 10 years ago. I was just going to get another Atom this fall, but Patagonia came out with a very similar jacket and it comes in one of my favorite colors: orange (Go Orabs!).
I've been wearing the Patagonia Micro Puff Jacket ($249) for the past few weeks and have been really impressed with it. It was the perfect weight to wear during a recent trip to Jackson Hole and the Grand Canyon where the temps fluctuated between 35-70 degrees. Most of the time I would forget that I had it on--it's that breathable. It is a trim fit meant for layering underneath a heavier coat for winter activities. I am a little concerned about the face fabric snagging, but the insulation is synthetic so if it does I won't have feathers flying all over the place. Patagonia's incredible warranty means I know they will fix my mistakes (for a small fee) giving my new jacket the same longevity as my old one.
