Osprey's Farpoint 55: Roman's Reivew
From Great Outdoor Store
Looking for a great pack to travel with? The Osprey Farpoint 55 is worth checking out! I recently purchased this pack for an upcoming trip to California and was immediately impressed with all the different bells and whistles. This pack comes in two different sizes, the small/medium and medium/large, to accommodate different torso sizes. The price tag is $180, which won’t break your budget and also includes Osprey’s All Mighty Guarantee.
This pack is designed to be used on flights, car camping, or just to have to basecamp. It is not designed to do any back country backpacking, but it can comfortably carry a load of up to 50 pounds. The Farpoint 55 is designed like a duffel bag, but also contains stow away backpack straps and hip belt. This pack has a lightweight frame to keep its shape and to transfer the weight from the harness to the hip belt. It offers a mesh back panel that allows ventilation. Unzip your way into the main compartment of this pack and you’ll find that it opens up flat, allowing you to easily access your items without moving everything around. Inside is a compartment for smaller items and two straps inside which allow you the ability to fasten your belongings down in transit. My favorite feature about this pack is that it offers a removable daypack, which is awesome for walks or small hikes! This daypack is 15L, while the main pack is 40. The daypack zips on and off, and only takes a minute to remove and put it back together. There are also straps on the bottom if you wanted to attach a sleeping pad on the outside.
I did not have any issues with using this as a carry-on during my recent flight. It fit perfectly in the overhead compartment and did not cause me any problems. I mainly had clothes in the pack and kept it relatively light and not overstuffed. I believe that the standard carry on size is 45L. If space is an issue, you have the option to quickly take off the day pack and use that as a personal item, leaving the main 40L pack as your carry-on.
The Farpoint 55 is a light, comfortable pack with a lot of padding around the hip belt, shoulder straps and around the back. It has the zippered daypack which is great for little excursions throughout the day. I'm a big fan of this pack and all that it has to offer. I'm already looking forward to using it on my next vacation!
